People Health & Place is fostering international collaborations to tackle health disparities in Brazil. Co-directed by Professor Rodrigo Reis, the unit recently hosted a workshop in Florianópolis, Brazil, supported by the Global Programs Faculty Research Fund. The event brought together leading experts from Brazilian universities to establish research priorities, formalize partnerships, and create educational initiatives. The group has already signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with Brazilian institutions, with more in progress. They are also developing a graduate course on health disparities and urban spaces to be implemented across partner institutions in Brazil, Mexico, Texas, and the Brown School.

“Issues of inequality are a growing concern in Brazil … Cities often lack cohesive spaces, which exacerbates social disparities … Brazil’s unique urban development patterns have intensified these inequalities, making it crucial to address these challenges through an interdisciplinary approach.”
